September 2020 Autoimmune News

Differences in HDL-Cholesterol Efflux Capacity (CEC) Between Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). RA patients have a more pro-atherogenic lipid pattern compared to those with SLE. However, CEC seems to be more damaged in SLE than in RA patients. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 08/08/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus and Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Prevalence of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with overt myocardial dysfunction in systemic lupus erythematosus. A case-control study. This study did not find any significant association of anti-phospholipid antibodies with overt myocardial dysfunction in patients of SLE. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Aug 4;961203320947784. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus and Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Cachexia in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE): Risk Factors and Relation to Disease Activity and Damage. Cachexia is an underrecognized syndrome in patients with SLE and SLE patients with intermittent cachexia have the highest risk of future organ damage. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 08/02/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

COVID-19 in Patients with Inflammatory Arthritis: A Prospective Study on the Effects of Comorbidities and DMARDs on Clinical Outcomes. Further work is needed to understand whether immunomodulatory therapies affect COVID-19 incidence. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 07/28/2020. (Also see DMARDs)

Dietary Inflammatory Index in relation to bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis risk and fracture risk: a systematic review and meta-analysis. Our analysis indicated that diets with high pro-inflammatory components might increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures and lower BMD of lumbar spine and total hip. PubMed, Osteoporos Int, 08/01/020. (Also see Osteoporosis and Food Guide)

Cryoglobulinemic Vasculitis (CV) in primary Sjögren's Syndrome pSS): Clinical presentation, association with lymphoma and comparison with Hepatitis C-related disease. Though infrequent, pSS-CV constitutes a distinct severe clinical phenotype of pSS. Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, 07/27/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Sjögren's Syndrome and Liver and Spleen Involvement)

Cervical Cancer Screening in Women with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Patients with SLE are at higher risk of abnormal cervical screening test results than controls, supporting the need for regular screening. PubMed, Arthritis Care Res (Hoboken), 08/16/2020. (Also see Cancer and Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Effects of exercise programmes on pain, disease activity and function in ankylosing spondylitis (AS): A meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. For patients with AS, exercise programmes improve pain, function and disease activity. PubMed, Eur J Clin Invest, 2020 Jul 19;e13352. (Also see Ankylosing Spondylitis)

Clinical outcomes of hospitalised patients with COVID-19 and chronic inflammatory and autoimmune (IA) rheumatic diseases: a multicentric matched cohort study. In hospitalised patients with chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases, having a connective tissue disease but not IA nor previous immunosuppressive therapies was associated with severe COVID-19. BMJ Journals, Annals of Rheumatic Diseases, 08/12/2020. (Also see Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases)

Respiratory diseases as risk factors for seropositive and seronegative rheumatoid arthritis and in relation to smoking. Respiratory diseases increase the risk for both seropositive and seronegative RA, but only among nonsmokers. PubMed, Arthritis Rheumatol, 08/16/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

SCLERO.ORG was the world's leading nonprofit for trustworthy research, support, education and awareness for scleroderma and related illnesses from 1998 to 2021. It was a grassroots movement from the original Scleroderma from A to Z web site, which was founded by Shelley Ensz. We were a 501(c)(3) U.S.-based public charitable foundation. We closed this web site and our nonprofit agency in April 2021.
