December 2020 Autoimmune News

Cytokines, 25-OH vit D and disease activity in patients with juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). IFN-γ and IL-17 were significantly higher in JO-SLE patients, while 25-OH Vit D was significantly lower compared to controls. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Nov 12;961203320973068. (Also see Pediatric Lupus and Cytokines)

The Risk and Consequences of Vertebral Fracture (VF) in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): A Population-based Data Linkage Study. The significantly increased risk of VF in patients with AS has not altered following the introduction of tumor necrosis factor inhibitor treatment. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2020 Nov 1;47(11):1629-1636. (Also see Ankylosing Spondylitis)

The dermatoscopic spectrum of cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE): a retrospective analysis by clinical subtype with clinicopathological correlation. Depending on CLE subtype, distinct dermatoscopic patterns are recognized. PubMed, Dermatol Ther, 11/09/2020. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Association Between Vitamin D Deficiency and Disease Activity, Disability, and Radiographic Progression in Early Rheumatoid Arthritis: The ESPOIR Cohort. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with more active and severe disease at baseline and may predict disability and radiographic progression over 1 year in early RA patients. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 2020 Nov 1;47(11):1624-1628. (Also see Rheumatoid Arthritis and Vitamin D Deficiency)

Outcomes of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) in Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Patients with RA who underwent PCI had more co-morbidities and longer, complex coronary lesions. PubMed, Am J Cardiol, 2020 Nov 2;S0002-9149(20)31181-4. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Rheumatoid Arthritis)

Adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome: Assessment and disabilities. Results suggest that ADHD can increase burden adding specific disability in work and social activities, and it is associated with a trend for the excessive use of opioid painkillers. PubMed, J Psychiatr Res, 2020 Oct 24;S0022-3956(20)31030-X. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

Mortality in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and neuropsychiatric (NP) involvement: A retrospective analysis from a tertiary referral center in the Netherlands. Mortality was increased in both major NPSLE and minor/non-NPSLE patients in comparison with the general population. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Oct 20;961203320963815. (Also see Symptoms and Complications of Lupus)

Prevention of recurrent miscarriage (RM) in women with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS): A systematic review and network meta-analysis. Our findings support the use of low-dose aspirin plus heparin as the first-line treatment for prevention of RM in women with APS, and support the efficacy of hydroxychloroquine, IVIG, and prednisone when added to current treatment regimens. PubMed, Lupus, 2020 Oct 20;961203320967097. (Also see Antiphospholipid Syndrome)

Molecular and Cellular Mechanisms of Itch in Psoriasis. In this review, we describe the clinical features of pruritus in psoriasis. PubMed, Int J Mol Sci, 2020 Nov 9;21(21):E8406. (Also see Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis)

The Co-Morbidity between Bipolar and Panic Disorder (comBD/PD) in Fibromyalgia (FM) Syndrome. These findings support the hypothesis that comBD/PD is related to the development of FM in a subgroup of patients. PubMed, J Clin Med, 2020 Nov 10;9(11):E3619. (Also see Fibromyalgia)

SCLERO.ORG was the world's leading nonprofit for trustworthy research, support, education and awareness for scleroderma and related illnesses from 1998 to 2021. It was a grassroots movement from the original Scleroderma from A to Z web site, which was founded by Shelley Ensz. We were a 501(c)(3) U.S.-based public charitable foundation. We closed this web site and our nonprofit agency in April 2021.
