May 2018 Scleroderma News

Intestinal Involvement in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc): A Clinical Review. Multidisciplinary approach of intestinal manifestations in SSc by gastroenterologists and rheumatologists is required for optimum management. PubMed, Dig Dis Sci, 2018 Apr;63(4):834-844. (Also see Gastrointestinal Involvement)

High acute phase protein levels correlate with pulmonary and skin involvement in patients with diffuse systemic sclerosis. High serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels could serve as biomarkers for pulmonary involvement. PubMed, J Int Med Res, 2018 Apr;46(4):1634-1639. (Also see Prognosis and Mortality and Prognosis of Pulmonary Hypertension)

Patients with systemic sclerosis–associated pulmonary arterial hypertension express a genomic signature distinct from patients with interstitial lung disease. Many gene expression changes occur early in the disease course, potentially allowing early detection. Journal of Scleroderma and Related Disorders, 03/22/2018. (Also see Prognosis of Pulmonary Hypertension)

Dental Hygiene Practices to Maintain a Healthy Mouth. The very first step in the digestion process begins in the mouth and for someone with scleroderma, simply chewing food can be exhausting. Scleroderma News, 03/29/2018. (Also see Dental Involvement)

Understanding the Light and Dark Sides to Anxiety with Chronic Illness. Anxiety can be exacerbated or caused by the experience of constant pain blended with feeling exhausted and unwell. Scleroderma News, 03/20/2018. (Also see Anxiety and Attitude)

Different profile of cytokine production in patients with systemic sclerosis (Ssc) and association with clinical manifestations. SSc patients have a different profile of cytokine production and this was associated with clinical manifestations. PubMed, Immunol Lett, 2018 Mar 27;198:12-16. (Also see Cytokines)

Serum level of endostatin and digital ulcers (DU) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) patients. Serum levels of endostatin are higher in SSc patients with DUs, especially in those with infected DUs. PubMed, Int Wound J, 03/30/2018. (Also see Digital Ulcers)

Incidence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) and determining factors in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). It was possible to identify manifest PH in almost 25% of patients using prospective right heart catheterisation during follow-up. PubMed, Eur Respir J, 2018 Apr 4;51(4). (Also see Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosis)

Comparing ultraviolet light A photo(chemo)therapy with Methotrexate (MTX) protocol in childhood localized scleroderma: Evidence from systematic review and meta–analysis approach. Our study supports the combination of MTX and glucocorticoids in patients with a high risk of complication and UVA1 could represent a therapeutic option in patients with limited scleroderma. Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism, 03/30/2018. (Also see Morphea Scleroderma Treatments and Immunosuppressants)

Red blood cell distribution width (RDW) as a related factor of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Besides the recognized risk factors, high RDW was an independent predictor of PAH in patients with SSc and may be a related factor for identifying the pulmonary arterial hypertension in SSc patients. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 2018 Apr;37(4):979-985. (Also see Prognosis of Pulmonary Hypertension)
