April 2019 Scleroderma News

Health–related quality of life (HRQoL) in systemic sclerosis (SSc) compared with other rheumatic diseases: a cross–sectional study. SSc patients report poorer HRQoL than patients with rheumatoid arthritis or systemic lupus erythematosus and the extent of skin involvement is associated with poorer HRQoL in SSc patients. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2019 Feb 15;21(1):61. (Also see Quality of Life)

Localised scleroderma en coup de sabre affecting the skin, dentition and bone tissue within craniofacial neural crest fields. SCS conditions seem to extend from the skin in the depth to the sella turcica area within neural crest fields. PubMed, Eur Arch Paediatr Dent, 03/07/2019. (Also see En Coup de Sabre)

Cannabinoid Signaling in the Skin: Therapeutic Potential of the "C(ut)annabinoid" System. The current review aims to give an overview of the available skin–relevant endo– and phytocannabinoid literature with a special emphasis on the putative translational potential. PubMed, Molecules, 2019 Mar 6;24(5). (Also see Endocannabinoid System)

Factors influencing Raynaud's condition score diary outcomes in systemic sclerosis. Patient–reported assessment of SSc–RP severity is associated with a number of factors including pain, catastrophisation and coping strategies. PubMed, J Rheumatol, 03/01/2019. (Also see Raynaud's)

Endothelial lesion and complement activation in patients with Scleroderma Renal Crisis (SRC). It is likely that we will be forced to redefine the SRC concept, focusing on the relationship between acute endothelial damage and complement activation. PubMed, J Bras Nefrol, 02/25/2019. (Also see Kidney (Renal) Involvement)

Case Report: Maxillofacial Implications of Scleroderma and Systemic Sclerosis. We present the case of a 26-year-old female patient with scleroderma who exhibited extreme maxillofacial manifestations of the disease. PubMed, J Oral Maxillofac Surg. (Also see Dental Involvement)

Pulmonary veno–occlusive disease (PVOD) is highly prevalent in scleroderma (SSc) patients undergoing lung transplantation. Presence of PVOD may be an unrecognised contributor to the dismal prognosis in patients with SSc –pulmonary hypertenson–interstitial lung disease. PubMed, ERJ Open Res, 2019 Feb 11;5(1). (Also see Lung Transplants for Pulmonary Hypertension and Lung Transplants)

Evolving insights into the cellular and molecular pathogenesis of fibrosis in systemic sclerosis (SSc). After reviewing the major and emerging cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying SSc, this article looks to identify clinical applications where this new molecular knowledge may allow for targeted treatment and personalized medicine approaches. PubMed, Transl Res, 02/23/2019. (Also see Fibroblasts)

Identification of regulators of the myofibroblast phenotype of primary dermal fibroblasts from early diffuse systemic sclerosis (dSSc) patients. Our results demonstrated the value of carefully–phenotyped SSc dermal fibroblasts as a platform for SSc target and drug discovery. PubMed, Sci Rep, 2019 Mar 14;9(1):4521. (Also see Fibroblasts)

Case Report: Scleroderma–like syndrome in a woman with silicone breast implants – critical review of the literature. We present a case of the scleroderma-like syndrome in a 48-year-old woman with a broken silicone breast implant and a review the current literature on this issue. PubMed, Reumatologia, 2019;57(1):55-58. (Also see Artificial Joints and Silicone Breast Implants)
