Higher estrogen levels linked to more severe disease in scleroderma. Higher estradiol levels were associated with more severe disease and heart involvement in men and in those positive for the autoantibody Scl-70, a greater risk of death. Science Daily, 06/06/2019. (Also see Hormones)

CCL3, IL-7, IL-13 and IFNγ transcripts are increased in skin's biopsy of systemic sclerosis (SSc). Low RUNX3 expression alters dendritic cell function in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and contributes to enhanced fibrosis. Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" with extensive brain involvement-Clinicopathologic correlations and response to anti-Interleukin-6 therapy. The interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitor tocilizumab was used and the patient improved dramatically, likely reflecting the drug's effect on the replenishment of endothelial progenitor cells. Serum concentrations of IL-17A, IL-17B, IL-17E and IL-17F in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Increased synthesis of IL-17B, IL-17E and IL-17F appears to play a role in the pathogenesis of SSc, in contrast to IL-17A. PubMed, Arch Med Sci, 2019 May;15(3):706-712. (Also see Interleukins)
