July 2019 Scleroderma News

Higher estrogen levels linked to more severe disease in scleroderma. Higher estradiol levels were associated with more severe disease and heart involvement in men and in those positive for the autoantibody Scl-70, a greater risk of death. Science Daily, 06/06/2019. (Also see Hormones)

Blockade of CCL24 with a monoclonal antibody ameliorates experimental dermal and pulmonary fibrosis. CCL24 plays an important role in pathological processes of skin and lung inflammation and fibrosis. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 05/25/2019. (Also see Pulmonary Fibrosis)

CCL3, IL-7, IL-13 and IFNγ transcripts are increased in skin's biopsy of systemic sclerosis (SSc). These molecules are involved in the pathogenesis of SSc, and how their interactions occur should be the subject of further studies. PubMed, Exp Dermatol, 06/04/2019. (Also see Skin Fibrosis and Cytokines)

Diagnosis and management of linear scleroderma in children. Clinical evaluation, both physical exam and history, is the most important aspect in diagnosing and assessing activity of linear scleroderma. PubMed, Curr Opin Pediatr, 05/30/2019. (Also see Juvenile Scleroderma Research and Linear Scleroderma)

Scleroderma: An insight into causes, pathogenesis and treatment strategies. Current review is an effort to reflect scleroderma in provisions of its pathogenesis, causative factors, and therapeutic approaches. PubMed, Pathophysiology, 05/18/2019. (Also see Causes of Scleroderma)

Whole blood viscosity in systemic sclerosis: a potential biomarker of pulmonary hypertension (PAH)? Higher whole blood viscosity levels in scleroderma patients with PAH was an independent indicator for PAH development. PubMed, Clin Rheumatol, 05/26/2019. (Also see Prognosis of Pulmonary Hypertension)

Low RUNX3 expression alters dendritic cell function in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) and contributes to enhanced fibrosis. We show at least two pathways potentially causing low runt-related transcription factor 3 level in SSc plasmacytoid dendritic cells. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 05/24/2019. (Also see Dendritic Cells)

Common Causes of Pain in Systemic Sclerosis (SSc): Frequency, Severity, and Relationship to Disease Status, Depression, and Quality of Life. The majority of patients with SSc suffer from different types of pain which is associated with more severe disease, depression and poor quality of life. PubMed, Pain Manag Nurs, 05/15/2019. (Also see Pain Management)

Linear scleroderma "en coup de sabre" with extensive brain involvement-Clinicopathologic correlations and response to anti-Interleukin-6 therapy. The interleukin-6 (IL-6) receptor inhibitor tocilizumab was used and the patient improved dramatically, likely reflecting the drug's effect on the replenishment of endothelial progenitor cells. PubMed, Orphanet J Rare Dis, 2019 May 16;14(1):110. (Also see En Coup de Sabre)

Serum concentrations of IL-17A, IL-17B, IL-17E and IL-17F in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Increased synthesis of IL-17B, IL-17E and IL-17F appears to play a role in the pathogenesis of SSc, in contrast to IL-17A. PubMed, Arch Med Sci, 2019 May;15(3):706-712. (Also see Interleukins)
