May 2020 Scleroderma News

Antigen-specific (Ab) humoral responses against Helicobacter pylori (Hp) in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Anti-Hp Abs are neither more frequent nor elevated in SSc compared with healthy population and these results suggest that Hp is unlikely to be involved in the development of SSc. PubMed, Immunol Res, 04/06/2020. (Also see Antibodies)

Case Report: COVID-19 in a patient with systemic sclerosis (SSc) treated with tocilizumab for Ssc-interstitial lung disease (ILD.) Our case indicates that IL-6-blocking treatment given for chronic autoimmune diseases may even prevent the development of severe COVID-19. BMJ Journals, Ann Rheum Dis. (Also see Clinical Trials)

Changes in Disease Activity and Damage Over Time in Patients With Morphea. Standard-of-care therapy appears to improve disease activity, which allows sclerosis to improve, and provides relative stability of other features of disease damage. PubMed, JAMA Dermatol, 04/01/2020. (Also see Morphea Treatments)

Smoking and systemic sclerosis (SSc): influence on microangiopathy and expression of anti-topoisomerase I antibodies (ATA) in a monocentric cohort. We observed a significant association between smoking history and positivity of ATA and we outlined the idea of a different effect of smoking on autoantibody expression between men and women. PubMed, Clin Exp Rheumatol, 03/25/2020. (Also see Antibodies and Preventive Care for Pulmonary Involvement)

Characteristics of Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension in Patients with Systemic Sclerosis and Anticentriole Autoantibodies (ACA). ACA-positive SSc-PAH rapidly deteriorates, so careful hemodynamic observation and timely aggressive use of pulmonary vasodilators should be considered. PubMed, Int Heart J, 2020;61(2):413-418. (Also see Antibodies and Pulmonary Hypertension Symptoms and Complications)

Biphasic Temporal Relationship between Cancers and Systemic Sclerosis (SSc): A Clinical Series from Montpellier University Hospital and Review of the Literature. This study brought to light two peaks of cancer occurrence in SSc patients. PubMed, J Clin Med, 2020 Mar 20;9(3). (Also see Cancer)
