December 2020 Scleroderma News

Cancer and scleroderma (SSc): recent insights. The knowledge will allow the development of future prospective studies evaluating clinically relevant and targeted cancer screening strategies for newly diagnosed SSc patients. PubMed, Curr Opin Rheumatol, 2020 Nov;32(6):479-487. (Also see Cancer and Scleroderma)

Serum S100A12 levels: Possible association with skin sclerosis and interstitial lung disease in systemic sclerosis (SSc). These results indicate a possible contribution of S100A12 to skin sclerosis and interstitial lung disease associated with Ssc. PubMed, Exp Dermatol, 10/17/2020. (Also see Pulmonary Fibrosis Diagnosis and Skin Fibrosis)

Safety and tolerability of nintedanib in patients with systemic sclerosis-associated interstitial lung disease (SSC-ILD)): data from the SENSCIS trial. The adverse event profile of nintedanib in patients with SSc-ILD is consistent with its established safety and tolerability profile in patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. PubMed, Ann Rheum Dis, 2020 Nov;79(11):1478-1484. (Also see Treatments for Pulmonary Fibrosis)

Diagnostic Power of Galectin-3 in Rheumatic Diseases. We concluded that diagnostic power of serum galectin-3 can be a very good laboratory marker in rheumatoid arthritis and scleroderma patients. PubMed, J Clin Med, 2020 Oct 15;9(10):3312. (Also see Prognosis and Mortality)

Bronchoalveolar Lavage (BAL) in Systemic Sclerosis (SSC) Patients: a Systematic Review. Alveolitis and the increase of some cytokines/chemokines in BAL were related to more severe pulmonary disease in SSc in the majority of the studies. PubMed, Curr Rheumatol Rev, 11/12/2020. (Also see Diagnosis of Pulmonary Involvement and Induced Sputum and Bronchoalveolar Lavage Tests)

Digital immunohistological dissection of immune privilege (IP) collapse in syringotropic autoimmune diseases: Implication for the pathogenesis. Dysregulated IP molecule expression may lead to sweat gland IP collapse and contribute to distinct inflammatory cell distribution in syringotropic autoimmune disorders. PubMed, J Dermatol Sci, 2020 Nov 2;S0923-1811(20)30333-9. (Also see The Human Immune System)

Nutritional status and predictors of weight loss in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Nutritional risk and gastrointestinal involvement are frequent and closely correlated in patients with SSc. PubMed, Clin Nutr ESPEN, 2020 Dec;40:164-170. (Also see Gastrointestinal Involvement and Diet and Systemic Scleroderma)

Scleroderma-specific autoantibodies embedded in immune complexes (ICs) mediate endothelial damage: an early event in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis. These data provide the first demonstration of the pathogenicity of ICs from scleroderma patients with different autoantibodies on the endothelium. PubMed, Arthritis Res Ther, 2020 Nov 9;22(1):265. (Also see Antibodies)

Putative functional pathogenic autoantibodies in systemic sclerosis. Several novel interesting autoantibodies, targeting antigens within the extracellular matrix or on the cell surface have been recently described in patients with SSc. PubMed, Eur J Rheumatol, 2020 Oct;7(Suppl 3):S181-S186. (Also see Antibodies)

Case Report: Nail Fold Dermatoscopic Findings in Scleroderma Patients. The patient initially experienced intermittent pain in both knees and skin hardening spread to both hands until the fingers could no longer be straightened. PubMed, Skinmed. (Also see Skin Fibrosis)

SCLERO.ORG was the world's leading nonprofit for trustworthy research, support, education and awareness for scleroderma and related illnesses from 1998 to 2021. It was a grassroots movement from the original Scleroderma from A to Z web site, which was founded by Shelley Ensz. We were a 501(c)(3) U.S.-based public charitable foundation. We closed this web site and our nonprofit agency in April 2021.
